World Series of Poker News Updates
Poker fans that dream of playing at the World Series of Poker and like to follow the ongoing developments of the series were given two recent snippets of news that may change the face of the WSOP forever. Jeffrey Pollack, the commissioner for the World Series of Poker, whose idea for the November nine changed the public experience of poker so dramatically is stepping down from his post and the proposed scheduled of the 2010 WSOP was leaked to the press. Add this to the announced news of a Harrah’s online poker room and the WSOP may be changing forever before our very eyes.
Poker rooms are arranging poker tournament qualifiers for seats and packages into the World Series of Poker for next year via their online poker rooms. The WSOP will already be considering the impact of the implementation of the Harrah’s online poker room which is due for development and launch in early 2010 which may affect the number of online poker players attending the series. Jeffrey Pollack’s resignation will further disrupt their plans.
Pollack attracted criticism by meeting with top players regularly and showing preference to them in terms of tournament rulings and poker tournament buy-in decisions. Players like Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth had large influence over decision making and it is considered that the WSOP became more about the professional players than the everyday poker player travelling to Las Vegas to fulfil their poker dreams. Speculation on a successor to Pollack as the face of the WSOP will continue for some time as Harrah’s have announced that there are no immediate plans to replace him at the moment. Pollack is tipped to move to President of Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment after a spell as Commissioner of the WSOP which is viewed as a success by most poker commentators.
His approach to the role may be a good lesson to everyone on how to conduct a high profile role. That is; to look after the interests of those who will ultimately judge you and the grassroots murmurings of discontent will not matter when you are in a new role as a result of your perceived success.
The leaked schedule for the 2010 WSOP sees six $1,000 open events and no $50,000 HORSE championships. This suggests a move from the professional player friendly series under Pollack to a more open event set-up. This may further attract criticism over devaluing the WSOP bracelets, but certainly more players will be able to play in these events which will have big fields.
There is an event called “The Players World Championship” which is rumoured to be an eight game mix. This would be highly popular amongst the well-known professionals who believe that Texas Hold ‘em poker is not a true representation of skill across all of pokers disciplines. The series will run from May 28th to July 5th, making this a marathon of over thirty days for any poker tournament specialists looking to grind as many poker tournaments as possible.
Thanks to the growing participation of online poker tournament series there will also be a six handed tournament which will see many online specialists turn up from their computer screens to challenge for the live bracelet in their preferred short handed poker set-up.
I recommend that you follow the bwin poker blog which will keep you informed of bwins poker tournament qualifiers for some of the big live poker tournaments that take place across the globe. These may be great practise for a WSOP bracelet run next May. It will be interesting to follow how the above developments affect the delivery of the World Series of Poker 2010.
