Introducing the World Series of Poker
Poker may just be a card game for some and simply a pastime for others. But for those who find a fondness beyond that of a hobby in poker, poker is more than just a card game. It’s similar to any recognized sport that even tournaments are held and conducted yearly all over the world for it.
Brief History of WSOP
One of the most prestigious and definitely sought after poker tournaments in the world is the World Series of Poker. In the year 1968, a particular Tom Moore held the first ever World Series of Poker in Reno at the Holiday Hotel and Casino.
A few years later, a man named Benny Binion realized the need to continue on the World Series of Poker and therefore held the World Series of Poker at his Casino called the Horseshoe in Las Vegas. Included in the first few World Series of Poker were events such as razz, seven-card stud, five-card stud, deuce to seven low-ball draw, and Texas hold’em.
The main event among these and probably the most popular is the Texas hold’em. Over the years, more and more varieties of poker emerged and were counted in as an event in the World Series of Poker. And as a tradition the World Series of Poker has kept, winners of each individual events are given a bracelet as part of their reward.
The Popular Poker Games in WSOP
Among the more than 50 events held annually in the World Series of Poker, the $10,000 buy-in no-limit Texas Hold’em has been considered the tournament’s main event. Winning this tournament’s main event automatically, though unofficially, proclaims the winner the World Champion.
Since professional players wish to produce better poker players and recognize the best poker player around, they have come up with the idea of the $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. event. H.O.R.S.E. stands for Hold ‘em, Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Eight-or-better, most probably the five biggest events held annually in the World Series of Poker.
The World Series of Poker has definitely drawn much attention from both professional and amateur poker players. Through this poker tournament, many poker players have been recognized for their success especially those who have succeeded in winning events in several World Series of Poker tournaments.
A few of the noted players are Johnny Moss, the first ever World Series of Poker winner; Doyle Brunso; Stu Ungar; and Johnny Chan. Other players have been noted as well for being the best among their opponents during these tournaments. To name a few, there’s Daniel Negreanu for 2004, Allen Cunningham for 2005, Jeff Madsen for 2006, and Tom Schneider for 2007.
