Is There a Need to Avoid Drunk Maniacs?
Hi,
Before anything else, I want to congratulate you for having a great site. Just from within, I’ve learned a lot of stuff.
Well, my question now is – is there a need to avoid drunk maniacs? Should I avoid them? This is actually a more psychological question than theoretical, but knowing the answer for these is really a big thing for me.
I’m 28 years old and been living in Los Angeles. For some time now, I’ve been playing 1/2 NL at the commerce casino and for the past 2 months, doing fairly well. Very solid poker with wide variety of positioned hands is my game. And for having so, I usually win between 100 to 300 a session. But of course, not all nights are great so I also had a few losing games. However, my overall winning percentage is between 80% – 90%, so it’s still not bad.
But unfortunately, yesterday, something happened that quite bothered my confidence. I was already in the table at 3pm and by 8pm was already close to 300, from my starting 40 which I bought in with when a guy looked drunk sat down casually. Some other drunk guys were also in every corner. At first, I thought it was a great opportunity to play for a few hours and earn money though at the back of my mind I already have enough and it was just my greedy self taking over.
Then suddenly, the drunk guy started raising every pot to 20, though the blinds are 1/2. After which, everyone else at the table started to fold every hand they have. This happens for a number of times, but eventually the 3rd time the table realizes he has no hand, so everyone else call him down. As a reaction, the drunk guy started to lose, then rebuy, etc.
To make the long story short, I lost my entire 300 dollar stack, not entirely to him but to some extent maybe. I don’t know if I’m making a sensible question here but I’m hoping I could get some possible answer or advise about what happened to me.
Looking back, my temperament and emotions are in control. Maybe I just let someone else force me to play at a different level and eventually affect me in an unknown, negative way.
One thing, if in case I continue to play during that instance, is there some sort of a bankroll type I should have played?
By the way, the buy in at the Commerce is 400 btw. I want to evolve and move on to much higher, bigger games. But of course, I don’t want to pressure my own self.
Sorry if my question ends up like a long story, I just want to have an appropriate response so I tried to explain everything comprehensively. Hope to hear a response or answer from you soon.
Thanks and great work,
Vincent
Vincent,
When you play drunk maniacs, the best thing to do is wait for a solid hand to try and punish him with. Unfortunately there will be times he will draw out on you. However, you play a drunk maniac the same as you do a maniac, tight and aggressive.
If the game gets too uncomfortable, leave the game and come back another day.
