Avoiding a Straight Flush

Hello, I would just like to ask a question. This is with regards to a funny situation that happened in one of my poker games.

A flop of Ac 5d 7d occurred and 5 players have seen it. I was holding Ad 3d and pleasingly have bet 1/3 the pot then. All but one folds.

Then, the turn is 4d. I have stumbled on my flush and ensured to trap. With assurance he placed a small bet which eventually triggered me to call.

Eventually, the river is 6d which implied that he probably may have already got the flush that I myself placed over him. Consequently, he placed a bet of 2,000 but just seconds before i re-raise him, a possibility for a straight flush on the board crossed my mind that cause me to call and lost the pot, unfortunately.

Whenever I remember that instance, I can’t avoid to smile and ask: when is the right time to put someone on a hand like this? It appears to me that opportunities come smoothly but I can’t get over from this hand.

Thanks for any answer or reply in advance. Same as well for putting up a very helpful site.

JM

JM,

When there are four cards on the board for a straight flush, at that point you can start to possibly put them on the hand. However, in your case, I wouldn’t have given him credit for it since he would have had to call with a 3 or an 8 in his hand. I would hope he wasn’t silly enough to stay in the hand with pocket 3’s or pocket 8’s after the flop.

I would have lost money too, because only 1 card beats you. He hit a 45 to 1 longshot to win.
