Playing a hand from seven card stud part two

Playing a hand from seven card stud part two10.0101

Following on from part one and at this point I was trying to figure out what they could be calling my bet on fourth street with and also what hand they could be putting me on. I felt sure that they were only putting me on tens at best and that my two medium pair was the boss poker hand at this stage.

On the fifth card my opponent bet all in after the jack fell and this bet was almost the size of the pot or near as damn it and calling this bet and losing would almost have me down to the felt too. Well he can’t possibly have a made straight or a flush yet. Three kings is very unlikely the way that this guy had been playing as was three jacks. Three sixes was extremely doubtful as I had seen a six passed so in my mind that left either a jack in the hole to make a pair of jacks or possibly K-J for a bigger two pair.

Maybe they had a king in the hole after all and had just hit a higher two pair. But my initial read had eliminated that possibility but I could easily be wrong. But if they have paired the jack then if they do in fact suspect that I only have a pair of tens then they could think that they do have the boss hand. Also a powerful bet on fifth street like that could convince me to dump two mediocre pair.

Thinking about this logically then he was unlikely to be putting me on rolled up tens although he could be putting me on a decent pair of some sort. I think he knew that I had some type of made hand and that I would not have re-raised pre-flop on a draw at that stage of the hand. The more that I thought about the situation the more I was trying to think about what hand they thought I had and the hand that I thought that they thought I had got was almost exactly what I did have.

I am not a wild poker player but do play aggressively when I get in but yet I will lay down a hand if I suspect that its second best. This player knew me so he knew full well that I had the capability to make a lay down. This felt like a situation where I needed to make the call but could easily get out drawn if I did.

But after quite a bit of further deliberating, I stuck my money in and made the call. The moment I did this I knew from the look on my opponents face that this was the result that he had not wanted and then I knew that my two pair was good at that stage. We completed the hand and I would like to report a happy ending to this but he outdrew me on the final card to make a higher two pair aces and jacks while my two pair failed to improve but I was happy with my play.
