Poker Prodigy Annette Obrestad Turns 21

In the world of Poker Annette Obrestad has already broken many records, broken many boundaries and carved her name forever into poker history. Her story is amazing and she turns 21 this week only now able to go to the USA and play poker in Vegas Casino’s. Judging by her incredible results in poker this amazing player is surely destined for a well-deserved place in Pokers Hall of Fame if she continues her rich vein of form in the USA tournaments.

Annette_15 was Annette’s username online starting playing poker when she was 15 years old. She asked her mother for $50 but when she refused she was undeterred and played freerolls until she won a little bit of money and then she never looked back, accumulating a bankroll of hundreds of thousands of dollars in under two years. She was already a big name online with a huge following on the poker forums when she went to the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, winning the tournament for a massive payout of £1 million. Only a month later, as if to quash any feeling that she was a flash in the pan in live tournaments she went on to finish second in an EPT Dublin event for another $400,000. All this before her 20th birthday!

Annette is sponsored by a major poker site and is their primary player in their stable. She is currently planning her schedule as she has reached the legal age to play World Series of Poker in 2010! All eyes will be on her as she goes to the series next year expected to do very well. It is rare that a player so young has so much expectation on them in tournaments. Tom “Durrrr” Dwan attracted a lot of attention but he is primarily a cash game specialist and his results have been moderate in large tournaments. Annette, however, is known for her tournament ability and the expectation is high that she can reproduce phenomenal results both live and online at the World Series next year. She is expected to be a multiple bracelet winner.

Annette is very much in the poker spotlight. In my research on poker I read most of the magazines and listen to most of the reputable poker podcasts. Annette has featured in many radio interviews discussing strategy and also in most of the monthly magazines discussing her success and plans for the future. She is often in back to back magazines and is certainly one of the most high profile and sought after pros in Europe. It is certainly an exciting time for her as her sponsor will be keen to buy her into many of the big US events as the intense interest in her will only benefit them.

Annette has not been kept from controversy however. She admitted that one of her big results online was someone else known she allowed to play poker using her account and that she was surprised they made the final table. Her sponsor’s website also had an advert recently banned because the advertising agency decided her appearance and dialogue in the advert suggested to young people easy money could be made from poker which was deemed to be misleading.  She also started playing and gambling with real money (despite winning it all online) under the legal age and admitted to learning Seven card Stud at a very early age, resulting in criticism of her parents relaxed attitude towards their child gambling at such high stakes whilst underage.

As she turns 21 she is about to hit the mainstream US scene but says she has no plans to uproot to live in Las Vegas full time. It looks likely she will continue travelling the world in poker tournaments and continue dominating the online game. Check your table draw before you begin a live tournament and play carefully if a young Norwegian lady called Annette Obrestad is sitting with you, your chips are in grave danger!
