Sweet Win For Savary At WPT
If you have a large bankroll and want to travel the world playing poker then there are a ton of big poker tournaments going on at various locations for you to get your high stakes poker fix. Here are some results from last week and as always plenty of big names have proven once again that poker is a game of skill only tempered by luck, rather than the other way around. There are usually between three and four big poker tournaments played each week.
The WPT in Marrakech has finished with the son of Irish Poker legend Donnacha O’Dea finishing in the runners-up spot. Eoghan O’Dea won €262,446 for his second place finish but the spoils went to Christophe Savary who wins €377,262 for the win. (A sweet win for Savary perhaps?) Savary held a reasonable chip lead going into the heads up battle and never reliquinished that lead. The WPT event attracted 416 players with November Nine finalist Antoine Saout finishing in 40th place for a small cash, and Tony G also cashing in the event. The WPT attracted criticism for only being staged in America and is now a more credible tour as it travels around the globe after a partnership with a global online poker site.
Eoghan O’Dea was had other successes showing poker skills are in his blood. He came second in the Poker Million in 2008 after holding a huge heads up chip lead for $260,000. He will be hoping to attain his first big win very soon after two runners-up finishes.
The Aruba Poker Classic was staged this week and this is always a big tournament. It was interesting to see whether it would still attract a good crowd to play as it was the first big tournament that was annually associated with Ultimate Bet after they admitted refunded $22 million that they cheated from their own players. 475 players turned up for the event and it was won by Brandon Hall, who collected $753,330 for first place. Robert Mizrachi, often left in the shadow of his brother Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi finished runner-up for $414,680. It is worth noting that a chop of the final two prize monies meant these numbers are only the official prizes, Mizrachi actually ended up with more money after the chop with over $600,000. Other notable finishers were double bracelet winner Brock Parker in 6th place winning just over $66,000 and Ty Reiman finishing in 17th place for $18,000.
The 2009 Pokernews Cup was held last week in Australia and was contested by 381 poker players each paying $2,200 to enter the tournament. It was won by Con Tsapkounis who won 250,000 AUD for his efforts. This event was contested by a largely unknown field with many players choosing to enter different events around the globe. The runner-up was Joe Cabret who takes away 130,000 AUD for his excellent finish. 32 players cashed in the tournament for a minimum prize of 4,000 AUD. Poker is very popular in Australia and events are always well populated. Normally players such as Joe Hachem and Daniel Negreanu travel to play in these events if their schedule permits it.
I was surprised that Tony G chose to enter the WPT is Marrakech rather than the Pokernews tournament as he is the owner of Pokernews and therefore has a vested interest in getting as much coverage for the tournament as possible. Considering there was not many high profile players in the event it would make sense for Tony to go there as a focus on what his company is trying to achieve through that tournament. It worked out quite well for Tony however, as he cashed in the WPT event so he cannot feel too bad about it.
