Poker News Snippets for 16th October 2009

The Hendon Mob must have been getting sick of hearing about the Hit Squad. Suddenly Ram Vaswani, Joe Beevers and the Boatman Brothers were only mentioned in relation to the squad as the older generation to the crop of hot shot young poker players. You just knew that they were eager to show that they are not over the hill just yet.

They managed that in fine style this week thanks to Ross Boatman and Barney Boatman having 1st and 4th place finishes respectively in the WPT Marrakech high rollers event. After making the final table they were hoping to go one and two in the event which would have been remarkable. Barney Boatman finished 4th in the event winning €41,017, leaving Ross Boatman in the clear to make a run for the title. He managed to win the event beating Nitsche Dominik heads up to win €135,535. Ross has been enjoying a poker renaissance recently with some excellent results. The Hendon mob website continues to be one of the top poker resource and results websites on the Internet and it is a great place to get involved in the community and to learn poker strategies.

The “Durrrr Challenge” between Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius finally recommenced last week playing just over 1000 hands. They have now played 25,145 of the allotted 50,000 hands and Tom Dwan is in the lead by $697,532. In their last session the largest pot was $194,992.50 where Dwans Set of Kings beat Patriks two pair of eights and sevens. Whilst entertaining, this challenge has been dragged out over a long period of time often because of the time differences between Dwan in America and Patrik over in Europe. It looks very likely that upon completion of this challenge it may have been running for well over one year.

The votes have been counted and there is a winner of the Poker Hall of Fame inductee for 2009. There was concern that Tom Dwan may win the place which was seen to discredit achievements by other players because Dwan is only in his early twenties but the overall best candidate was seen to be Mike Sexton. The poker community agreed and he convincingly won the vote. He will be inducted on November 7th just before the playing of the final table of the WSOP main event. Mike is a great ambassador for poker and has done a lot of work for charities. He is also the face of the WPT and one of the most recognisable poker faces throughout pokers recent boom. Most players in the race for the hall of fame spot, players like Daniel Negreanu and Eric Siedel, supported Sexton for his hall of fame induction.

Checking the data tracking websites is a great way to see how the best players in the world are doing this year in their online poker games. These guys play at huge stakes and suffer big losses sometimes as well as mind blowing wins. According to a leading poker news website, Gus Hansen is estimated to be down by over $6.5 million dollars this year. A bad year so far for the Great Dane, but you can bet he will be fighting to win all of that back and will feature heavily in the highest stakes games for a long time to come.

Finally, pokernews have announced that Harrah’s are looking at the live Eastern European market with which to expand into. They are considering being involved in a $2 billion Metropolis mixed development complex which they would invest $50 million into a Slovakia casino. They have signed a non-binding letter of intent with a Hungarian developer. Life is good for Harrah’s at the moment. They are about to enter the online poker world and also looking to expand their live casino empire.
