Joseph Cada Wins the World Series of Poker Main Event
After a very tense heads up battle the main event is over and a champion is crowned. 21 year old Joseph Cada has become the champion, beating Darvin Moon to the prestigious title. Joseph wins a massive $8.5 million and the title of Pokers World Champion for 2009. As a poker professional, like Peter Eastgate the winner of 2008, he will be seen in many tournaments and interviews throughout the next twelve months. The biggest and most drawn out poker tournament of the year is now at a close with the winner having a great story of his own in becoming the youngest main event champion in history.
Credit must go to Darvin Moon who managed to overturn the chip deficit from the start of heads up play and take a three to one chip lead at one point. Cada was very confident saying that he plays heads up poker for six days a week online and only the big tournaments on Sundays. He was not to be denied as destiny gave him a helping hand to what is a life changing win for the young man. He played well and showed that he has talent. We will certainly see more of Darvin Moon in future tournaments I am sure.
Cada is no stranger to big wins, having won around $147,000 playing the Full Tilt 1k tournament in January 2008. A look at Cada’s Pocket Fives tournament record shows that he is a consistent tournament player who has plenty of success at them. He will no doubt be a permanent feature on the tournament scene now that he has become one of the biggest winners in one go in WSOP history.
Play began on the 277th hand of the final table and straight away the players got involved in a big pot with Moon winning a massive first pot with QQ and Cada holding a 99. Perhaps only the river of Kc on the 3s-Ks-2d board (turn Ad) prevented a Moon double up on the very first hand! Throughout the heads up match the players were making the standard raise straight up to $3 million which made for some big pots. Many of the hands were walkovers with both players preferring to wait for better hands before committing chips, but the match was extremely entertaining.
Moon built up a strong lead holding $145,200,000 chips and Cada holding $49,600,000 by hand 338 of final table action and it looked like the logger was going to win the event. On hand 356, Cada found himself facing an all-in check raise from Moon holding Jh-9d on a board of Tc-5d-9h-Td He agonised, head in hands before tensely making the call for his tournament life. Moon revealed 7s-8s for the open ended straight draw. Cada managed to avoid the J or 6 that would fill the gutter for Moon and took a chip lead of $108,300,000 to Moons now shorter $86,500,000. It was a great and gutsy call from Cada that proved to be the turning point in the contest.
Hand 364 saw Moon three bet re-raise to $8 million with Cada the initial raiser of $3 million. Cada checked his cards and announced all-in. Moon called. Cada revealed pocket nines (9c-9d) and Qd-Jd for Moon. The crowd went wild. The flop was 8c-2c-7s. By this time Cada was in the arms of his friend Cliff Josephy according to the wsop news feed! The turn is a Kh and the river, after the customary long pause the 7c. Cada celebrates having become the youngest champion ever. Moon takes home $5.1 million for his second place finish.
Congratulations to Joseph Cada, the WSOP Champion for 2009. Celebrations will no doubt go on for a long time, starting right now!
