Jeffrey Lisandro Stud Champion of 2009!
The stand out performance of this year’s World Series of Poker is without doubt Jeffrey Lisandro. Jeffrey Lisandro has won three World Series of Poker bracelets, all of which have come in the discipline of Stud! An amazing record for Jeffrey who has had multiple cashes in the 2009 WSOP and is enjoying a brilliant run of form.
His first WSOP bracelet was won in Event 32 of the 2007 World Series winning the $2,000 buy-in event beating out 212 other participants to the first prize of $118,426. Notable finishers in that event included Mel Judah in 10th place and Daniel Negreanu in 5th.
His World Series of 2008 was perhaps best remembered in an ugly confrontation with another player over the posting of an ante. Lisandro felt his honour was questioned and he aggressively threatened violence to his opponent before being calmed down by staff and other players. His next taste of success in the 2008 World Series was a second place finish in the No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball with ReBuys Event 18. 85 professionals re-bought and added on 272 times in the $5,000 buy-in event. Mike Matusow took home the bracelet in that event, but Lisandro did amazingly to finish second from a final table that included no less than 8 top professional players. Mike Matusow, Lisandro, Erick Lindgren, Barry Greenstein, Tom Schneider, Tom Dwan, Tony G and David Benyamine were the final 9 contestants.
He fared better in yet another Stud event at this years WSOP, winning his second bracelet in the 16th Event Seven Card Stud, beating out 358 Stud players to win $124,975. A nice profit on the $1,500 buy-in. He beat top professional John Juanda who finished 5th in that event. Amazingly in Event 6 in the $10,000 buy-in Lisandro finished 9th out of 142 players for $36,266.
He managed two more cashes in other events before securing another bracelet, his third overall and second of this years world series. World Championship Seven Card Stud H/L-8 (Event 37) belonged to him as he beat another quality Stud field to win $431,656 from the $10,000 buy-in and beat out 163 players. Doyle Brunson came close to an 11th bracelet by finishing seventh. Justin “BoostedJ” Smith came 8th, with Scotty Nguyen in 11th.
This alone was seen as a massive achievement. Many column inches were written praising this often volatile character and his two bracelet wins. But Lisandro was not finished. He entered the $2500 7-Card Razz Event 44 tournament with another 314 runners. Incredibly he prevailed yet again for the third bracelet win of the series. He won $188,390 for his 1st place finish. “Cowboy” Kenna James finished 6th in this event. In a post tournament interview he said that he felt he was playing excellently and that he would win the tournament throughout.
This is a truly magnificent performance by arguably the best Stud player in the world. Consistently he plays a style of tournament poker, particularly in Stud, that sees him get a chance at the final table and his record of deep finishes is amazing. Will he have a major run at the World Series Main Event? You would not bet against him cashing yet again. Perhaps the biggest disappointment for Jeffrey is that the event is Texas Holdem, and not a version of Stud! He looks likely to be a front runner for winning the Player of the Year title, which would be much deserved. It is rare indeed for the large fields to produce multiple bracelet winners due to the luck factor, but although Lisandro will have had good luck in his wins he must certainly have a very high level of skill to win three bracelets in one series. If he decides to write a Stud strategy book he will certainly sell a few copies!
