High Stakes Poker Report for January 2010

High Stakes Poker Report for January 201010.0101

Some of the highest stakes poker players had a great year in 2009. Others, like Tom “Durrrr” Dwan did not posting total losses of over $3 million. 2010 guarantees one thing at the highest stakes poker tables and that is plenty of large pots. The poker games played by the professionals at these levels are Texas Hold’em poker, mostly No Limit and Pot Limit Omaha. These games are normally in a variety of full ring and short handed versions, including heads up. This report looks at how the best players are doing so far this year.

The poker databases that tracks the results of the top professional poker players is not perfect but you can usually get a rough idea on who is winning, who is losing and approximately how much money is won or lost from the tracked data. Some of my friends have commented that sometimes one or more of their sessions are missed and this can have a bearing on exact profits or losses shown. The databases also do not track poker tournament or SNG performances or live poker stats. So whilst limited as only results shown are from online cash games only, for the top players this usually represents a large proportion of their poker playing so I am happy to use the stats from these sites as a reasonably reliable source of information.

It has only been nine days since New Year and you wonder if the top nosebleed stakes players even noticed whilst they played their six figure poker pots. So far this year the biggest online winner is Urindanger. The Dang brothers are prominent online cash game players who mix it up with the top players like Phil Ivey and Durrrr. Urindanger is currently profiting $299,758 over 7,334 hands. This is a bb/100 rate of 16.15. This is probably not sustainable for him over the long term and he will feel the swing soon but it is a nice profit for playing 7,000 poker hands!

Brian Hastings has continued where he left off at the end of 2009 after his massive win against Isildur1. Is he worried of his suspension from Full Tilt Red Pro status? Probably not after his online poker skills have earned him an additional $201,852 from 2,645 hands. This is a great return at 21.24 big blinds per 100 hands. Hastings has run excellently since playing Isildur1 and winning nearly $4 million from him and Brian continues to bag big profits from the online poker tables. Time will tell if this talented pro can maintain his excellent results.

Further down the list Gus Hansen has played 443 hands so far this year but managed to secure a $64,000 profit. Gus used to be the big swinger at the online poker tables with often a massive list of players sitting waiting to play him. Players like Durrrr, Isildur1 and Martonas have played so much poker at such crazy levels that Gus has been somewhat forgotten, but he remains one player capable of big swings at the poker table. There is always action where the “Great Dane” is concerned!

Although the high stakes poker games are operating at a calmer level since the Isildur1 period of play, it is more of a realistic level of high stakes poker. It is easy to look at Urindanger’s $299,000 profit and think this is relatively small win considering what we saw in December 2009. This is, however, a great sum of money to earn from online poker.

We will continue to monitor the progress of the top pros in the highest stakes games as the year continues to offer you the latest trends and regular updates of the results.
