Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge Results
Tom “Durrrr” Dwan is a massive name online and with his addition as a Team Full Tilt member he is destined to become a massive name in the live poker arena too. So large is Toms appeal to young poker players and online poker players, Matchroom Sports recorded a heads up challenge where players took on Tom at high stakes Pot Limit Omaha and Texas Hold ‘em in a bid to prove that he will take on all comers. Everyone was invited; three players took on the challenge.
Marcello “luckexpress” Marigliano was the first player to sit with Dwan and sat down with $250,000. After more than twelve hours of play at primarily No Limit Texas Hold ‘em and a little Pot Limit Omaha towards the end of the session Marcello managed to secure a small profit, of $22,500 at the end of the first days play.
Dwan commented that he was surprised that neither player lost the $500,000 and that given the stakes involved it was amazing that there was such a small margin between them at the end. This should be seen as a great compliment to Marigliano whose profile will be raised as a result of his performances in this challenge.
Day two saw the challenge move up a gear with Illari “Ziigmund” Sahamies stepping up to the plate to fight his online rival and friend. This match was completely Pot Limit Omaha and British poker fans will be treated to this game on their screens for the first time. This may cause a surge in popularity of the “new” Texas Hold ‘em and what many players think is the next big game in poker. There will be those that are disappointed that these two cash game goliaths chose not to play Texas Hold ‘em.
It would be expected that Dwan would prepare for the match the right way. Instead of having a good nights sleep Dwan played a marathon twelve hour session against online phenom Isildur1. Dwan still managed to show a profit of $68,000 against his online rival Ziigmund after another twelve hours of PLO. At one point Dwan won a $512,000 pot which overturned a $250,000 deficit giving him the lead. Both players know each others game really well and this helped Dwan who admitted to being tired after his marathon match against Isildur1 the night before.
With the score 1-1 leading into the final match of the challenge it was the one that everyone was talking about. Sammy “Any Two” George was his opponent. It was claimed that George would be no match for Dwan and this turned out to be accurate. Dwan said later on that he was getting good cards but after George ran AK into Dwans AA it was always going to be hard to recover for Sammy, who had to re-buy after the hand.
The contest will be remembered for a hand where Dwan shoved $400,000 at Sammy holding nothing but 72 against Sammy’s two pair. Unfortunately for George the bet was too large and he folded and Dwan showed the amazing bluff. This proved a turning point in the contest and when all was said and done Dwan had won $750,000 from the unfortunate George. Both players said the cards favoured Dwan but poker players know that skill generally wins through and Dwan was just too much for his opponent who you feel would have needed to go on a big heater just to contest Dwan in the challenge.
Matchroom Sports are already in talks to take the live challenge to the USA next year and British fans will be looking forward to the edited version of the challenge hitting our screens in the New Year. Congratulations to Durrrr, who proved once again that despite criticisms for his aggressive style, he remains one of the best cash game poker players in the world.
