Aaron Gustavson Wins EPT London

There is a new champion of the EPT from the London event and he is Las Vegas Poker professional Aaron Gustavson. After five days of play, the 23 year old beat a quality final table that included 2008 World Series of Poker main event champion Peter Eastgate to claim the first prize of £850,000. Here are the final place finishers with their payouts.

1. Aaron Gustavson – £850,000
2. Peter Eastgate – £530,000
3. Nikolai Senninger – £285,000
4. Martin Gudvangen – £227,000
5. Dominic Cullen – £173,000
6. Rui Milhomens – £124,000
7. Raymond Wu – £87,000
8. Karim Bennani – £50,100

The big story of the EPT London event was the formidable 2nd place of Danish professional, although now residing in the UK, Peter Eastgate. Eastgate has been criticised on Internet forums as being a lucky winner of the main event in 2008 and not that strong a tournament player. This excellent result of yet another massive prize in a major poker tournament goes some way you feel to justifying his status as a top tournament professional.

Gustavson held a large chip lead of around 2/1 going into the final table but upon getting heads up with Eastgate he never surrendered the chip lead before he went on to win the tournament. The final hand between the two was Eastgate holding A9 and Gustavson fortunately holding AQ. All of the chips went into the pot and Gustavson’s AQ held up for the win. The right player won on the night with Gustavson in devastating form knocking out Raymond Wu, Dominic Cullen,Nikolai Senninger and, of course, Peter Eastgate on his way to the win. Big things are expected of the 23 year old due to his excellent results of late.

Gustavson has said that he intends to now buy a home with his winnings in Las Vegas and perhaps even buy himself a Porsche. He is no stranger to success particularly online where he managed to win the Sunday Warmup on July 26th 2009 for $135,010. He has had amazing success in 2009. He won the Borgata Summer Open on June 20th 2009 for $53,592 and came 4th in event 18 of the WCOOP last month for another $19,500. He obviously enjoys participating in the larger poker events and certainly has enjoyed major success this year where tentative guesses at his profits would certainly be over $1 million.

The EPT has grown immensely over the past few years and is now considered part of the Trinity of poker tournaments along with the WSOP and WPT. Roland De Wolfe is a UK player who holds a bracelet in all three series and this is considered a highly prestigious triple crown to hold. Gavin Griffin has also managed to achieve this Triple Crown. The pursuit of this Triple Crown means that many top professionals now travel for EPT events and the strength of the fields are getting much tougher than when the tour first began. John Duthie, the top UK pro who was the founder of the EPT must be proud and amazed by how big it has become.

If you fancy a shot at an EPT championship then you better get some good practise in. There are plenty of online texas holdem poker tournaments to hone your skills and get you ready for the action. The next event of EPT Season 6 is EPT Warsaw from October 20th – 25th.
