Why Do You Play Poker: For Money or Just Pleasure

There is a big debate on whether people play poker for money or for fun. A number of Texas holdem players believe that people play poker to win money. However, statistics disapprove this notion because the number of people who lose money while playing poker games is considerably higher than those who gain money out of it.

Despite the fact that there are other avenues through which individuals can make money, most people choose poker games. The main reason behind such decisions is because poker is fun playing. Sometimes as an experienced player, watching a guy make some trivial mistakes at a game of poker is nerve wrecking. It is thus good to learn some poker etiquette before you start playing a game of poker.

Ensure that you do not let any other person know what you have in store when a hand is going on. Revealing your cards may not be contrary to the rules but there are casinos that fine a poker player for such an act. It is considered a breach of etiquette because it might give another player undue advantage. Even if it happens accidentally, it is always wise to offer an apology.

Making gestures through bodily movements for example opening your mouth in amazement, reeling back on your chair or banging the table in reaction to a chance where you could have folded and your cards might have made big hand on the flop, is against etiquette. It might improve some poker player’s position relative to their opponents.

It is not always wise to brag about your prowess in the game. Additionally, you should not be verbally abusive and mean. If some form of verbal abuse is directed at you by a cocky poker player, it is advisable to play down the issue. Use some cool remarks such as, “Yeah, I should have seen that one coming, I guess I will be wiser next time.” Do not let the snide remarks get to you, always play it safe.

Do not release your pent up frustrations at the dealer by either throwing cards at him or trying to give him a tip. Dealers are professional people and they do not influence the outcome of a game in any way. Give them the maximum respect they deserve as individuals.

Finally, never talk about a hand when you are not involved in it. There are instances in a poker game where individual players need maximum concentration. When they are in hand, is one such occasion where they will need maximum concentration. Therefore, it is always wise to keep your two cents worth of advice during such critical times.

Other situations normally arise when a player who is not in hand is allowed to talk. This is acceptable in almost all poker games across the world. When playing poker games, players are normally engrossed in mental calculations of their bets. This may hamper their speed at counting their chips. It is therefore allowed for someone in the audience to shout out the number provided it is accurate.
