Big Week For British Poker
In Britain there are many good poker tournaments but you must travel far and wide across the Island to play in them. The scene is growing, however, and with great performances by James Akenhead in the WSOP and WSOPE, and good finishes recently by fellow Hit Squad member Praz Bansi, British poker is well represented on the world stage. Here are some recent results from the domestic circuit, where all players amateur and professionals alike enjoy some great events, with cash prizes that are definitely worth fighting for.
The British Poker Masters latest leg is complete with a field of 150 contesting the £500 buy-in event creating a prize pool of £76,000. The winner was crowned and John Gardner took away a first prize of £13,500. The second place finisher was Richard Lewis and he won £20,000. There was a chop between the final three runners in this tournament which on chip equity meant Lewis won the most money. Chris Brice finished in third place and he took away £16,500 for his top three placing.
The best poker club in the country (according to many of its members) is Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham and despite being rumoured to be facing closure recently following the new laws on tax and poker it had its Twenty20 Weekend with two £100 freezeouts each with a tasty guarantee of £20,000. 280 players played each tournament meaning anyone thinking that the recession might cause small playing fields were to be disappointed. The extra action more than made up for this however. The first event win went to James Mount who won just over £9000 and the second event was won by Fraser Bain for just over £8600. It is good to see a poker room offering guarantees to events, which always encourages players to attend.
DTD is now open seven days a week with a varied and well considered poker tournament schedule to suit all players from the high rollers to the low stakes players. Hopefully this popular club is here to stay.
Situated within the popular Grosvenor Casinos (I personally play in the Newcastle Grosvenor regularly) the Amateur Poker Assocation & Tour (APAT) continued its tour of the country. Bolton was the latest venue and local lad John Kay won the event. APAT have a great website and really put a lot of effort into the tour and making the structures as efficient as possible for the players. They have plenty of team events and are represented online with a link to a major poker site. You should definitely take the time to learn how to play poker correctly and give yourself a shot at some of the juicy prize pools on offer. Your bankroll will thank you for it!
There are not many big tournaments on the UK scene until after the November nine. All eyes are now on James Akenhead to see if he can win the WSOP main event. He has a tough table with chip leader Darvin Moon on his left and the poker legend that is Phil Ivey sitting directly to his right. Good luck to him. Look out for more news from the British live poker scene and maybe next time it will be your name in lights as we report on your big win! There may be a surge in poker interest if James does well so we can only hope we are on the cusp of another big poker boom like in 2003 when Moneymaker won the event. Fingers crossed everyone!
